Ultimate beginner’s guide on how to care for your wig

You have taken the step to buy your perfect wig ensuring that you have the option to look great every day.

People love to wear wigs. Most of the time people just want that instant way of changing up their look, or sometimes they want to give their own natural hair a break from styling.

To ensure that your lovely new wig will last you as long as possible, it is important to look after your wig. If it is your first time wearing a wig, do not worry.

Keeping a wig in good condition is quite simple, and we have made it easy for you with this beginner’s guide on how to care for your wig.

If you follow these easy steps, you will ensure that your wig will last you for the longest possible time.

    Types of wigs

Firstly, you need to double check which type of wig you own. Some wigs are made from human hair, while others are made from synthetic hair. It is important to know what your wig is made of to be sure what type of products you can use on it and whether you can style it using heat or not.

Human hair wigs can be styled using tools that require heat. Certain types of synthetic hair are heat-resistant, while others are not.

Being aware of the type of wig that you own is thus crucial to know before you start washing or styling it.

    Washing

Before washing you wig, be sure to gently comb it out first. We recommend using a wide-tooth comb or even your fingers to smooth out any tangles. Start combing the wig at the tips of the hair, working your way upward. This will minimize any damage from combing.

Then it is time to get your wig wet. You can either soak your wig in water for a minute or hold it under running water until it is wet. Put some shampoo in the palm of your hand and work it into a lather. Gently apply the shampoo to the hair on your wig without rubbing or twisting it. Once the shampoo is worked through the hair, you can rinse it off with water.

Conditioning the wig is similar to the washing process. After washing the wig, gently pat the wig with a soft towel to get rid of excess water. Put a small amount of conditioner in the palm of your hand and softly work it through the hair. Leave the conditioner on the hair to set for a few minutes and let it work its magic. When done, you can rinse it off again.

We recommend investing in products that are especially made for your wig, so do your research before buying just any products.

    Drying and styling

You might be tempted to blow dry your wig, but letting it dry naturally is always best. After washing, lightly blot it with a towel to get rid of excess water. Never wring your wig, as this will damage the hair strands.

After getting rid of excess water, place your wig on a head stand or hang it up so that it does not lose its shape. Then just wait for it to dry completely.

When your wig is dry, depending on the type of material it’s made of, you can style it as you wish. Remember to double check whether you can use heat styling on your wig. If you want to cut your wig to style it differently, we recommend taking it to a professional hairstylist.

    Storage

When you are not using your wig, be sure to store it in an upright position. You can use a mannequin head, a head stand or a hook. If you use a mannequin head or a head stand, ensure that it is smaller than your wig so that it won’t stretch out. If it stretches it might not fit your head as well as it should.

    Dos and don’ts

You can care for your wig the same way you would care for your own hair

    • Sleeping with a bonnet is a great way of caring for your wig.
    • Swimming in excessively chlorinated water can do the same damage to a wig that it can to human hair.
    • Do remember to take care of your own natural hair. Keep your own hair neat and clean to avoid any discomfort.
    • Do cover your wig with a light material in order to avoid dust when not wearing it.
    • Brush your wig twice a day to avoid tangles.
